As another year of travels wraps up for us, it is always a fun activity to reflect on the highlights of a year well spent.
We rang in 2017 with some dear friends at a much-loved place that we’ve revisited many times, Whitefish, Montana. There we skied the Big Mountain, explored the nordic trails in town, and enjoyed the peace of our cabin in the woods.
Cozy cabin under the stars outside of Whitefish, MT.
There’s no denying that Japan is hot right now. Every conversation I have will fellow travellers seems to involve either a recently completed or upcoming trip to Japan. While it positively shines in the springtime (hello cherry blossoms!), visiting Japan in winter can be a special experience. Here is our top five reasons for travelling to Japan in winter:
As the mercury drops and snow begins to fly in Alberta our thoughts turn from summer activities like hiking, cycling, and camping to winter ones such as skiing. While some may moan and groan throughout the cold season, we simply love being outside in the snow. We’re blessed to have some of the best skiing in the world here in Alberta, and living in Calgary gives us easy access to the Rocky Mountains. There isn’t much in the way of bad skiing in Alberta, but each resort does bring something a little different. This is our local take on the best ski resorts near Calgary, hopefully we’ll inspire you to book a trip to Alberta to explore the slopes this winter! Have you ever entered a place and felt like you were being watched? Do strange shapes sometimes appear out of the corner of your eye? Does a place just feel off and give you the creeps? If seeking out scares is something on your travel itinerary, consider visiting some of the creepiest places that I’ve visited around the world.
Halloween is just around the corner so what better time to turn our minds to our scariest travel stories. Travel horror stories are unique in that they’re less about ghosts and ghouls, and often about missed connections and lost luggage, but they are terrifying nonetheless. I’ve been fortunate enough not to suffer through too many truly scary travel experiences, but have encountered some frights on the road nonetheless. Here are some of my most terrifying travel experiences.
Autumn is both a beautiful season of transformation and a wonderful time to travel. September, October, and November are considered off-season months in many places that feature lower prices, crisp fall weather, and trees that truly shine with their autumnal foliage. Fall is one of my favorite times to sneak away for a short trip to find some local zen. The following are some off-the-beaten-path gems where you can enjoy all the best that fall has to offer without the crowds.
We’ve had a busy couple of months here at Zen Travellers, but with the new year comes a new focus, and a new look to our blog!
Since our last post, we rang in the new year in one of our favourite places, skied and skated our way to a happy winter, got hitched, and went on our honeymoon to Japan! Now that those busy months seem like a distant memory, we have been taking some time to reflect and refocus on which adventures we want to embark on first in our married life.
We already know that travel will be a big part of our future together, but what about the here and now? All the rushing around we did for the wedding planning took its toll on our enjoyment of the present. This caused us to pause and think; what in our home would we miss if we were gone?
